The name iphilomath is derived from the Greek roots phil, meaning ‘to love’, and máthēma meaning ‘to learn’. Thus, iphilomath is ‘I Love to Learn’. Iphilomath focuses specifically on math learning, thus, the name is a play with words because iphilomath simultaneously means, ‘I Love Math’. We can combine these dual meanings and say that by iphilomath, we mean, I love to learn math!
We offer virtual math education courses and in the future, we will offer math education products.
At iphilomath we take a neoclassical approach to math learning. We intertwine the tenets of classical teaching while incorporating successful modern advancements and techniques in the subject. Our philosophy is best stated by Paul Lockhart,
“Mathematics is the music of reason. To do mathematics is to engage in an act of discovery and conjecture, intuition and inspiration; to be in a state of confusion— not because it makes no sense to you, but because you gave it sense and you still don’t understand what your creation is up to; to have a breakthrough idea; to be frustrated as an artist; to be awed and overwhelmed by an almost painful beauty …”

Who We Are
Dr. Riley is a native of Dallas, TX spending much of her childhood reading, running track, and watching Star Trek with her mom. She was competitive on the track and in the classroom. Dr. Riley graduated Valedictorian of her high school class and went on to earn a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Texas at Arlington. After earning her Master’s degree she worked as a Quantitative Analyst or Statistician in the industries of energy, medical research, and aerospace engineering. Though she enjoyed working, she ultimately was compelled to respond to an internal call to educating students. Her natural teaching style aligns almost perfectly with the tenets of classical teaching; taking a holistic approach requiring students exhibit learning beyond memorizing algorithms. Dr. Riley has a passion for math education and seeks to revolutionize the way mathematics is taught.
